Breast reconstruction is a set of operative procedures to recreate a woman’s breast(s) after mastectomy (removal of the breast) or to correct a breast anomaly. This can be accomplished through the use of a prosthesis (breast implant), or a woman’s own tissue (flap surgery). Often operations on the other breast are also pursued to attain better symmetry. Recreation of a nipple and a pigmented areola are also a part of reconstructing the breast. Although a reconstructed breast will never exactly match a normal breast excellent results can be achieved for many women.
